New Years Resolutions..

I’m not a huge fan of New Year’s resolutions. Don’t get me wrong, I love the intention behind resolutions—the idea that you can suddenly turn over a new leaf and change all the things you don’t like about your life. I think I usually bomb on mine because I set the bar too high. Durring this past year I think I groomed myself for the new year 2012 so...I am ready!

I am going to appreciate the beauty, kindness, warmth, and good intentions of people around me. People are never going to say exactly the right thing or do exactly what I’d like for them to do in the moment. But that doesn’t mean they’re not amazing people who want the best for me—and that’s pretty amazing no matter how many times they put their feet in their mouths.

Reflect on my accomplishments. Am I exactly where I want to be in my life/career/relationships? No way. But look at all the things I have accomplished! And look at the exciting journey I have ahead of me as I work toward the life I want to live and become the person I want to be.

Have more fun. Life is too short to spend it doing things you hate and hating the things you do. This year, I want to have more fun at every little task—no matter how menial or mundane.

Moo-Less Chocolate Pie Recipe

Ingredients
13 ounces semisweet chocolate chips
1/3 cup coffee liqueur
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 pound silken tofu, drained
1 tablespoon honey
1 (9-inch) prepared chocolate wafer crust, recipe follows
Directions
Place enough water in the bottom of a 4-quart saucepan to come 1 inch up the sides. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.

Melt the chocolate chips with the liqueur and vanilla in a medium metal bowl set over the simmering water, stirring often with a rubber or silicone spatula. Combine the tofu, chocolate mixture and honey in a blender or food processor and spin until smooth, about 1 minute. Pour the filling into the crust and refrigerate for 2 hours, or until the filling sets firm.

Chocolate Wafer Crust: I bought a store made graham cracker crust..just as good!
6 1/2 ounces chocolate wafer cookies
1 tablespoon sugar
3 ounces unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Spin the cookies and sugar in a food processor until fine crumbs. Then drizzle in the butter, pulsing to combine. Press this mixture firmly and evenly into the bottom, up the sides and just over the lip of a 9-inch metal pie pan.

Bake on the middle rack of the oven until crust is set and appears dry, 18 to 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool completely, about 1 hour.

OK holidays are practically over I've been officially on vacation from work since last Wednesday and I think I've been pretty productive ..except for my painting I have a BLOCK! IDK nor do I care today because I have painted and painted and painted and baked and baked and baked (last week) cleaned and basically glued all the little pieces of my life in my home together that seem to fall apart while I am out of the house 12 hours a day all year. I've been to my yoga classes almost every day and I'm really sore but nothing feels better than accomplishing a pose that just seemed so unattainable and I swear I am 2 inches taller! Forward head to knee sitting bend, that's right I layed flat on my legs like a pancake..and boy do I feel it today, two days in a row. Today was like a high speed bootcamp class..awesome! Yesterday morning I went to the town hall and was sworn in as a member of the Southwick Cultural Council. Now I'm almost official I have to take a government ethics test online print the certificate and bring it back. I've really been focusing on my diet, I made this delicious tofu silken chocolate pie...the earthy crunchy stuff is really good if you make it right, it was better than a regular chocolate pie even my kids ate it and loved it. I think I might post that recipe! So over all a very healing vacation. I'll be super charged for the new year :)

It's been a while since I posted anything on my blog I've been really busy! I'm going to a yoga class in downtown hartford at least 3 times a week and I love it! I'm hooked! I started about three months ago in a beginners class once a week and as I became stronger started increasing my classes. I could do this every day! Since July I cut out out all sugar/bread/wheat/pasta and I went down 5 sizes between yoga and cutting back! I feel great! Here are a few watercolor paintings I painted inspired by yoga :)

Southwick Library Solo Show

Great news! I was invited to participate in a one month show at the Southwick Library located on 95 Feeding Hills Road, Southwick, MA in the William A.Lapore Gallery. I have 12 paintings hanging in the gallery right now, I hung them last night. A few are mixed media, pastel and some are acrylic on canvas. It's really nice and bright inside the library and if I must say so myself the colors in my painting actually helped to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Since about two weeks prior to Thanksgiving I have been exhibiting some of my paintings at Autumn Light Studio and Gallery on 304 West Main Street in Avon, Ct. Last week I sold two paintings and I was so excited! It's a beautiful gallery with the work of local and regional artists.

I love gaining an extra hour of sleep! I think we should keep gaining one every year, LOL. Not a bad week/weekend, took some well needed time off from the day job but can't wait till my next vacation in December. Sat. night I went to a friends/co-workers house for a Lia Sophia Jewelry party. I never pass up the chance to hang with friends and drink wine! Good night fun times. Today I barely got dressed and painted all day, 4 paintings, just let it happen, no thoughts, just positive energy. This is really my favorite time of the year. I'm the big tangerine on the right, LOL. :)

I haven't posted in a long time. I've been painting quite a bit lately for all kinds of projects. I'm falling back to a folk art style of painting (modern) that I really enjoy. I'm using paper and molding past and acrylic paint. I was in a slump for a few months all confussed about what I was going to paint. Everytime I attend an art event I question my own work. I really have to stop doing that! I wind up with a painters block. Recently I was thinking that I would love to cast some sculptures. I found a casting company online that would allow me to sculpted something out of clay and they would make the mold from the sculpture and pour bronze in the mold! OK, seriously I don't think I have the money for this but I'm going to find out soon how much it will cost. I have a lot of projects that I would love to do, I could take the cheaper route and cast in cement on my own this winter. That's another thought and it's so easy, just sculpt out of clay, wrap it in plaster gauze let it dry and ta da instant mold, pour the cement in! You have to fill a large sturdy box with sand and place the mold upside down (open side up) in the box of sand and then pour the cement in, wet the top and cover with plastic wrap and then just wait till it hardens. Once back in 1989 I took a sculpture class and part of my final was to create a sculpture using metal, pop rivet, plaster and plexiglass. I wish I still had a picture of it. LOL I welded an iron rod with iron wire together that resembled a giant ear of corn, 11 feet tall! Long story it was so big I couldn't take it with me and the instructor was really ticked off that I didn't remove it from the class. Oh well..so I can't really create anything too large unless I'm prepard to rent a crane to pull it out of my basement, LOL! So these are my creative thoughts for the day. In the mean time I'm posting a few new pics of paintings that I've been working on. This blog is so messed up I'm having the worst time with the layout I have blank spots. Hopefully I'll have it fixed soon!

This painting by far exceeded my expectations. I wanted to capture movement and energy. I didn't really want to focus on the fine details that create a realistic feel. If I could have blended the images of the figures into the background with out any hard definate lines I would have. But sometimes when I work very fast with paint with out a definate image in front of me, LOL I have no idea what is going to appear on the canvas. I prefer to use heavy thick acrylics. I tried not to blend my back ground colors on this painting. I actually applied the paint right out of the tube in dime size drops with out the brush right on the canvas and alternated the colors, then went in with a dry 3/4 flat brush and repetitively brushed the paint down. So basically wet on wet. Every thing else is trial and error, sometimes error is a good thing. I think I've mentioned before I NEVER worry about how something is going to come out. I think it hinders creativity, so just do it! LOL

Working on an acrylic portrait. Having more fun with the images around the portrait, hahah. Found that multiple layers of paint on the face has help me achieve the results I wanted. There is always room for improvement! Matte Finish works best for flesh tones, some of my paint brands has a plastic like effect that can be beneficial for some images, not for what I personally want to achieve in a face. I'm looking for a medium to add to those paints to create a matte finish. I might just break the bank and invest in some expensive new re-workable acrylics with matte finish that I read about. Patience and time are my biggest obsticles. This weekend I had an opportunity to break out the big guns! hahaha It's still an unfinished work I'm taking a break today since I basically worked on this painting for well over 12 hours. Tip don't work wet on wet when layering paint for flesh tones in acrylic. There is no formula for achieving flesh tones you have to see all the colors and take your time with a project like this. Dry,repaint and repeat! I work fast on my folk art it works in that sense. Here are some images, not exactly in the correct order that show the progress of the work. I'll finish this week and post the finished product.

Happy Monday! Well here it is, lot's of detail, texture bold colors. I can't wait to mat and frame it, I might keep this one too, lol! I like to have repetitive designs, shapes texture. I also care to have more of an abstract image when I'm in creative mode. I did challenge myself on realism. And I still have that goal in mind but I find that I produce more work when I don't put any pressure on myself.

So on another note on my mind tonight. I put a quote on my FB out of peer presure, lol. I started thinking tonight I need to put my own words on there. I was reading a post by someone who said randomly that quotes were "other peoples" thoughts and that is so true! What is up with all the quotes ? I know I said that I was going to post some wood carved prints but as usual I got side tracked with two other projects. Experimenting with scratch art. I could have given it a little more detail, didn't want to over do it. I like the simplicity of the image. I am also working on a watercolor that I just love similar to the Indian art that I posted a few days ago, the lady floating amongst swirls of color, lol. I have another one with cool texture. Its a little more controlled using very little water.... but anyway I'll post that later. Happy 4th of July!

So I was playing around with watercolor and the glass bead gel again just to see what kind of effect I would get with texture. I've only used it with acrylic so far. I really like it with watercolor because there's no worry of loosing the effect that it's intended for, a little sparkle! I'm keeping this one. Just a little abstract city sceen on paper.

Sold! 9x14 pen and ink. Very simple, sold to a young lady who loves horses, I almost wanted to just give it to her! But I sold it for pennies on the dollar. It was actually just a quick sketch I was playing around with. I posted it on facebook and I was surprised! I have a cute little following of young ladies age 12/13 years old that have been inspired to draw and paint! So I'm having so much fun giving them simple tips and techniques through facebook right now. When I was about 12 my father came home and told me he signed me up for a pastel drawing class that was held at a department store that is no longer in business. The instructor was actually a weather man from Connecticut who was also an artist. This was in the early 80's, but prior to those years in the 70's the weathermen would draw out the weather while they were broadcasting. I really enjoyed that class.

Hmm canvas paper, very non stable, but I like it! Versatile! Water based oil and acrylic mixed I like that too. Decided to give the watercolors a rest tonight and belt out something just .....creative. It's bigger 18x24 has a lot of texture. No brushes were used just a pallet knife, actually I cheated and couldn't find my knife so I used an old butter knife. The water based oils dry a little faster than traditional oils and allows you to create a great layering effect so when you scape off a layer of paint the lower base stays in tact.... Next up more carving, this time pine no linoleum can't wait!

IT'S ONLY MONDAY! I've hit a brick wall, decided today on my drive into work, I really need to get my game on! Fabric and glass...I really need to practice I love modern folk art but I can't help it, something is pulling me towards realism! whine whine whine, I have a head ache, wish I had more TIME! This weekend I'm visiting my old art teacher again, Saturday, hahah he has no idea what is in store for him. He's going to help me organize a solo show. Couple of cases of Champagne and here we go..... can't wait, lot's of planning! Have to figure out how many paintings? I have about 200 invites but I can't fit all of those people in the design studio so I'm on search for a location that will accommodate my friends in Connecticut. Maybe Hartford? The grand opening at wall talk is July 10th. Looking forward to it, going out for dinner and drinks with friends!

Watercolor......

I was at work in a silly mood luckily my co-workers tollerate me because I tend to have bursts of energy and since I work in such a restricted office it tends to come out in funny ways. I was staring at my friend her and decided to do a little one minute sketch OF COURSE she doesn't smoke, nor does she have a tatoo! But the outcome was very funny and I'm glad she thought it was funny too, WHEW!

Can't quit figure out what my style is. That's ok I like mixing it up (no pun intended). Ok so the little boy in the corner with the umbrella came out looking like a little monkey boy. Eh, I can live with my mistakes.
And I haven't quite mastered my horizon line, oh well again, I can live with it.

Then the last painting was originally a sunset with the ocean...it totally bored me so I added some gypsy looking lady with flowing clothes and some sparkle YEAH, I love sparkle...

Red Wolf watercolor 9x11

Got a thing for red! Oops I skipped a day, but I did really paint, however I had not finished the work and jumped into another project. I read today an article on a blog called ArtTo Learn off the Artsy Shark website some really awesome tips. So tada! I took a huge brush and didn't allow myself a smaller brush for details. LOL and boy did I work it. Heavy strokes, dabbles, dribbles you name it I did it. Basically I was just not aiming for perfection and with out any stress I was just able to create. I love the results of this 9x11 watercolor I was able to incorporate my favorite bold colors with a new fluid medium that I've been practicing. More to come.....

I just made it! I promised myself one painting per day, small works. And the watercolor saga continues.....Nothing represents loss of controll with a brush better than watercolor and I have yet to master it! (grrrrr) I love the layering effects, but I really need to master the highs and lows. Shadows, that's it! So as the days continue so will I with a brush in one hand, watercolor on the tip and a scowl on my face, I'm not giving up LOL!

I've decided to belt out a painting per day but not with a lot of pressure. Simple things. Watercolor has not always been my friend, lol! I have a tendency to paint with a heavy hand and thick paint. I love bold hard lines but watercolor really challenges me. What I like to do is go in and paint fast. I picked up that little technique believe it or not this past weekend when an art teacher from my past (high school) unbelievable, called me to congratulate me on my magazine cover. He had me come over to the his house to show me his studio and the hundreds of paintings that he's painted. Everything from watercolor to block printing. I listened to him very carefully and at one point he was laughing at himself saying I paint very fast, then I go back in and finish. I thought HELLO that is a fantastic idea. I think it's a cool little trick. So I tried it, I took the paper and I painted up all the shadows and watery shapes. Then I went back in after it dried and "tried" to give everything some contrast. Over all I think it was a good practice. I'm not entirely happy with it, because I really wanted to achieve a more glassy effect on the vases. I suppose it's all about creating. This little painting is only 8x8. So that's my goal for the next few weeks to continuously paint at night small works to add to my collection. When I finish I generally toss it aside and tell my self to go back and look at later, start a new project. Weird I usually like it later?

Linoleum Block Prints

My art teacher from high school (24 years ago LOL) called me today to congratulate me on having my work published on the cover of Southwoods Magazine. He's now 84 year old and still paints. He reminded me of all the projects he taught and I had totally forgot about block prints either on wood or linoleum. I felt so inspired after I talked to him and then visited him at his studio after seeing all of his work that I ran out and picked up some linoleum and tools and started carving! I forgot how fun this is. It's actually hard work though lol!

I really like mixing things up though. It's a nice break from just acrylics and the gel mediums to work with ink. One creative thought leads to another and I think that is what it's all about. If you're having a painters block, try carving on linoleum or pine wood, you'll really be inspired to create. I was really excited with the results.

So I've been on vacation for the past two weeks from my "job" and it feels like someone has breathed life back into me! I've been having a blast! I've been raising hell with my friends on facebook, LOL! Teasing my friends at work, lol. My house is finally clean! I'm FREE! I'm able to paint anytime I want, I've caught up with my of my oldest friends who I have not spoken to in almost 13 years! We just lost touch! We found each other on facebook and made plans right away to meet! We live quite far away from each other. It was so fun to catch up on old times and new times, since I had never met any of her children! Tomorrow I'm headed to Newburyport MA. with my kids to meet up with my friend to tour the area, I guess there are loads of galleries and shops, I can't wait!

I'm having a great time experimenting with Goldens glass bead gell. I saw it in the store and the sample was just a blob of gel over a metalic paint and it really stood out. So far I've learned that if you spread it thin over dried paint you can really get the glassy sparkle effect. Mix it in with thick paint and your going to just get a texture which I like but I think it just defeats the whole purpose of the glass beads. I saw pumice also I think I might try that next. I love this painting especially the little cottage, I want to live here, lol!

I had a lot of fun with this new painting. I took a

great picture of these flowers in my back yard and just started to paint. It's 16x20 acrylic with a little metalic gold. I love the shock factor of the folk art cat and mouse kind of makes me chuckle a little. Over all I'm happy with everything, I just love a little bling and the combination of colors with the gold satisfies my need for sparkle, lol!

I'm actually posting backwards here! Last Monday was such a beautiful day I was outside on my deck all day painting. My painting companion "Jerry" was taking a snooze. I was painting a larger canvas of an abstract landscape of Italy. I think I'm starting to master painting sky and water, it's the actual landscape that I need to work on. In the end I added a little glitz with a light spray of gold glitter! Oh and by the way this is acrylic.

Yeah! I finally was able to make it over to Wall Talk Art and Design located at 7 Pleasant Street in Northampton, MA. on Wednesday night to hang my paintings! The owner would love to call her business a gallery but due to the lack of handicap access with the business on the second floor, legally she cannot give her store the tittle of "gallery". And that's fine with me, she has a collection of art work from some of the most tallented artists I have ever seen! The business is actually a design studio. If you can make it over there to check it out I really encourage you to do so! I know I plan on purchasing something for my own collection! I have been so busy lately getting ready for my older son's graduation from high school, and college paper work that I have barely had much time to post any new work. But today I have some free time and I thought I might share some photos that I took the other night!

By chance I was painting a way this past weekend posting some of my work on my Facebook page. I work full time at American Express as Travel Counselor. I was so amused when I first posted the painting of the ladies having coffee, one colleague remarked is that Mary? Several other posts followed with giggles and comments. So then I started to think about how many times I can have block, I look around for the obvious things to paint and I realized it was right in front of my nose! My talented friends from work! With that thought another inspired painting and hopefully more to continue! Have a great day!

Well, the Chelsea MA show is a bust! I was accepted but unfortunately the coordinator never got back to me to inform me of the details! Like where to send the check? So I've been busy painting, this first image of poppies is an acrylic, encaustic on canvas 18" X 24". I'm experimenting with water mixable oil paints (abstract with bottle and faces). The bright owl painting is one of my faves.

Southwick Cultural Council Fine Art Show, in Southwick, MA. April 10th and 11th 2010. One more day and what a success! Here I am (in blue) with one of my oldest friends that I grew up with Rebecca in front of one of my exhibits today. So far the show is a great success!

SOLD! You can't really see everything in this acrylic painting on canvas. When I started I thought about time and how fast it goes by and doesn't wait for anyone. In the center I started with a stop watch and for the silver metal effect I used a thick layer of metallic acrylic paint. From the stop watch came the face and tears that turned out to be fish. A tomato plant a mixer and a bottle of wine. Some of my favorites, since I love to bake and garden and have an occasional great bottle of sparkling wine. This painting reminds me of so many of my interests that were inspired by my father. This painting was actually the most popular painting at my most recent show this past weekend. I was so surprised to see how many different generations of people were drawn to it! I was sad to see it go when it was sold but I know that the person who purchased it can see all of their favorite memories and hobbies also!

This was my first test with texture on canvas using a thin gel medium. As the image began to develop I noticed that it really conveyed a peaceful feeling. It does have a bit of a spiritual feel although that was not my intent when I started. My intent was really to capture an old renaissance painting that appeared to be painted on stone or plaster. I finished with a light wash of burnt sienna acrylic paint. I plan on exhibiting this painting in April.

Cave Painting! A thick layer of molding paste and acrylic paint applied to a gallery wrapped 23 1/2 X 17 1/2 gessoed canvas helped to create this painting which reminded me so much of a cave painting when I finished the red bull. A mystical aged looked began to appear on the canvas and inspired me to continue with shadows of horses in the back ground. All and all I really pleased with the results the combination of acrylic and paste help to create a leather cracked appearance
